Work on the Aaron Mills Apartments in Martinsville is nearing completion, with the first senior residents moving into their new homes this month. Last week, Vice Mayor Kathy Lawson, Council Member Julian Mei, Interim City Manager Rob Fincher, and other city staff toured the facility alongside representatives from Landmark Development.
The new complex on Aaron Street offers 52 apartments for people aged 55 and older. There are 34 one-bedroom units and 18 two-bedroom units. Rents range from $542 to $650 per month for a one-bedroom apartment and $675 to $800 for a two-bedroom unit.
According to city officials, accessibility and long-term affordability were priorities throughout the project’s development. The building features energy-efficient materials and systems designed to keep utility costs low for residents.
The site previously housed American Furniture before a fire destroyed the property in 2014. In 2018, discussions began between the City of Martinsville and Landmark Development about repurposing the area. These talks led to its transformation into senior housing.
Because it was classified as a brownfield site, Martinsville secured around $500,000 from the Virginia Brownfields Assistance Fund—a grant jointly offered by the Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership—to clean up and prepare the land for redevelopment.
Despite delays caused by increased construction costs during COVID-19, work continued on schedule until all units were leased ahead of move-in this November.
“The focus of the development has always centered on accessibility and long-term affordability for seniors. The building was constructed with energy-efficient materials and systems in order to help limit utility expenses for residents.”
