Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA), who represents Virginia’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress, recently chaired a hearing focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in American health care. The session, titled “Examining Opportunities to Advance American Health Care through the Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies,” was held by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.
Following the hearing, Chairman Griffith stated:
“In the health care space today, AI is being deployed by innovators to empower patients along their personal health care journey, support health care providers, and reduce unnecessary administrative burdens. Applications of AI and machine learning have increased across the health care sector in recent years and will only play a more pronounced role in the daily lives of all Americans moving forward.”
Griffith’s opening remarks at the hearing are available online. He also questioned witnesses about rural health care provider access to AI technologies and discussed early detection.
Griffith was named Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health in July. As part of his initial activities as chairman, he visited several rural health care providers in Southwest Virginia. His first subcommittee hearing as chair addressed reauthorizing legislation related to public health and rural health care.
Morgan Griffith has served as a member of Congress since 2011 after replacing Rick Boucher. Before joining Congress, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2000 to 2010. Born in Philadelphia in 1958, Griffith now lives in Salem. He graduated from Emory and Henry College with a BA in 1980 and earned a JD from Washington and Lee University in 1983.
