A recent report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified several communities and localities in Virginia’s Ninth District as “sanctuary jurisdictions.” This designation refers to areas that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

In response, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) released a statement addressing the issue. He emphasized that “Ninth District law enforcement organizations and localities are very cooperative with the federal government in the handling and detainment of illegal aliens.”

Griffith expressed surprise at the DHS’s classification, noting, “It is a surprising development to see some of our localities listed as ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ by DHS.” He stated that his office is seeking clarification from federal liaisons but has not yet received a definitive answer.

The congressman suggested that paperwork anomalies related to federal detainers might be involved, particularly at regional jails. A detainer is a legal request for law enforcement to hold an individual until federal authorities can take custody.

Griffith assured constituents he would continue monitoring the situation closely and hopes to have specific answers within the next week.
