The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $1 million grant to the Smyth Wythe Airport Commission in Wythe County, Virginia. The funds will be used for the East End Hangar Development project at Mountain Empire Airport.
U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) announced the grant and highlighted his role in securing the funding. “I am proud that most of my community project funding request, also known as an earmark, was approved to deliver federal funds to the Mountain Empire Airport,” Griffith said. “This DOT grant for $1,000,000 helps the Smyth Wythe Airport Commission update facilities at Mountain Empire Airport for enhanced aircraft storage.”
The grant is part of Griffith’s community funding project requests for Fiscal Year 2024. Additional hangars are expected to help meet demand for aircraft storage at the airport.
Morgan Griffith has represented Virginia’s 9th District in Congress since 2011, after previously serving in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2000 to 2010. He was born in Philadelphia in 1958 and lives in Salem. Griffith holds a BA from Emory and Henry College and a JD from Washington and Lee University.
