The U.S. Department of Education has granted Mountain Empire Community College in Wise County, Virginia, a TRIO grant worth $358,413. This funding is aimed at supporting academic development and helping students complete their college education successfully. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) commented on the grant:

“Southwest Virginia communities benefit from education opportunities at local community colleges.”

“This TRIO grant for $358,413 helps Mountain Empire Community College support students in their educational pursuits at the institution.”

Federal TRIO Programs are federal outreach and student services initiatives that provide assistance to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The funds are part of the TRIO Student Support Services program, which offers resources to higher education institutions to aid academic development and encourage students to fulfill their postsecondary education goals.

In 2024, Congressman Griffith met with TRIO students in Washington D.C., including some from Virginia’s Ninth District.
