The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $281,865 grant to the Smyth Wythe Airport Commission in Wythe County, Virginia. The funding will be used for the design phase of rehabilitating an existing runway at Mountain Empire Airport.
U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) commented on the award: “Improvements to airport runways enhance safety and aviation operations and may increase usage of the facility.
“This DOT grant for more than $280,000 helps the Smyth Wythe Airport Commission improve a runway at Mountain Empire Airport.”
The grant is part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Airport Improvements Program. Earlier this week, Congressman Griffith announced another DOT grant of $1 million to the same commission, which resulted from his community funding project requests for Fiscal Year 2024.
Morgan Griffith has represented Virginia’s 9th district in Congress since 2011 after replacing Rick Boucher. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2000 to 2010. Griffith was born in Philadelphia in 1958 and currently lives in Salem. He graduated from Emory and Henry College with a BA in 1980 and earned his JD from Washington and Lee University in 1983.
