The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2026 ahead of a government funding deadline set for January 30. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Included in this appropriations bill is $1 million in federal funding secured by Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) for a project at Virginia Tech aimed at enhancing nuclear reactor testing and safety through modern technologies.

“I am proud to help secure in this appropriations bill $1 million for Virginia Tech. These important funds will help Virginia Tech research modernized ways to enhance nuclear reactor system monitoring and safety,” said Congressman Griffith. “I am hopeful that the Senate passes this commerce, justice and science appropriations bill so Virginia Tech is one step closer to receiving these funds to complete this important nuclear energy project.”

The community project funding request was submitted by Rep. Griffith for fiscal year 2026.

Congressman Morgan Griffith has represented Virginia’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 2011, after replacing Rick Boucher. He previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2000 to 2010. Born in Philadelphia in 1958, Griffith resides in Salem and holds degrees from Emory and Henry College and Washington and Lee University.

Other appropriations bills considered this week include those related to energy and water as well as commerce, justice, and science.
