U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) is urging the Trump Administration to include federal corrections officers in the exemptions provided by Executive Order 14251, which currently recognizes certain law enforcement and national security roles but does not specifically cover federal corrections officers. Griffith emphasized his support for these officers, particularly those at USP Lee, a high-security federal prison located in Virginia’s Ninth District with over 1,300 inmates.
Griffith stated: “I greatly respect and admire the work of our federal corrections officers, including those who serve USP Lee.
“Through letters to the White House and discussions with Congressional liaisons, I am hopeful that President Trump will amend his Executive Order to help our federal corrections officers and ensure USP Lee corrections officers receive access to their labor union.”
USP Lee is the only federal prison in Virginia’s Ninth District. Griffith has previously toured USP Lee and met with its personnel in Washington, DC.
Morgan Griffith has represented Virginia’s 9th district in Congress since 2011 after succeeding Rick Boucher. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2000 to 2010. He was born in Philadelphia in 1958 and currently lives in Salem. Griffith holds a BA from Emory and Henry College (1980) and a JD from Washington and Lee University (1983).
