The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 3095, a bill that instructs the United States Postal Service to assign unique ZIP Codes to specific communities across the nation. Fairlawn, Virginia, is among those set to benefit from this legislation.
Following the passage of H.R. 3095 in the House, Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) commented on the significance of this development for Fairlawn: “For years, the lack of a unique ZIP Code has caused problems for the Fairlawn community. This issue is characterized in part by failed delivery of mail materials, lost access to tax revenue, and more recently, barriers to Hurricane Helene-related federal assistance. I am proud to have led an effort in the House to remedy this situation and secure a unique ZIP code for the Fairlawn community.”
Fairlawn currently shares its ZIP Code with Radford City despite being located in Pulaski County. The shared code has been problematic during situations such as Hurricane Helene when residents could not apply for federal aid due to jurisdictional issues.
Griffith had previously introduced similar legislation during the 118th Congress and advocated for it on the House floor last December when H.R. 8753 was passed by the House. In collaboration with Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine from Virginia, Griffith introduced H.R. 279 earlier this year specifically targeting Fairlawn’s ZIP Code needs.
H.R. 279 was subsequently incorporated into H.R. 3095 which successfully passed through the House but now awaits Senate consideration.
