Martinsville Circuit Court Judge G. Carter Greer will retire on February 28, 2026, ending a legal career of more than forty years and over two decades as a judge in Martinsville and nearby areas.
Judge Greer began his judicial service in Martinsville in 2003 on the General District Court before being appointed as Circuit Court Judge in 2005. He is recognized for his steady leadership, commitment to public service, and dedication to fair justice. “Throughout his time on the bench, he has been known for his steady leadership, commitment to public service, and dedication to the fair administration of justice,” according to the court’s announcement.
Prior to serving as a judge, Greer worked at several law firms. He started at Greer and Greer in Rocky Mount from 1983 to 1991, practicing general law. He then joined Young, Haskins, Man & Gregory in Martinsville from 1991 to 1998, focusing on medical malpractice, personal injury, and criminal defense cases. In 1998, he established C. Carter Greer, P.C., where he specialized in workers’ compensation and criminal defense until becoming a judge in 2003.
Greer’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington and Lee University earned in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law obtained in 1983.
The next Circuit Court Judge will be appointed by the General Assembly.
