The Martinsville Water Treatment Plant received the Virginia Optimization Program 2025 Silver Award on April 9, 2026. The award recognizes the plant’s efforts to optimize performance and ensure high-quality drinking water.

The recognition highlights the importance of providing safe drinking water that exceeds regulatory requirements. The Virginia Optimization Program (VOP), created in 2004, works with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Area-Wide Optimization Program to help drinking water systems improve their operations.

According to information from the city, the VOP supports local facilities by encouraging them to go beyond minimum standards for water quality. Research in this area has shown that meeting optimized performance goals can increase public health protection.

The program’s focus is on continuous improvement and collaboration between state agencies and local treatment plants. By receiving this award, Martinsville’s facility is recognized for its commitment to maintaining high standards for residents’ drinking water.

Looking ahead, continued participation in optimization programs may further enhance public confidence in municipal water supplies.
