Record Setting Cavs Pummel Dragons

13

University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 4

Lendon Redwine set a UVA Wise NCAA Division II era school record with six touchdown passes while the Cavalier defense established a new school and South Atlantic Conference record with 13 sacks in Saturday's season opening 54-0 defeat over Virginia University-Lynchburg at Carl Smith Stadium.

UVA Wise (1-0) put the game out of reach in the first quarter of the contest as Dane Damron's team erupted for 23 first quarter points. Redwine fired a trio of touchdown passes in the first 15 minutes as he hooked up with Caleb Martin on a pair of touchdown strikes in the game's first 10 minutes.

The signal caller's other first quarter touchdown pass went to Devin Heckstall. The Utah State transfer had an impressive debut in a UVA Wise uniform as the receiver hauled in five catches for 116 yards and a pair of scores.

JJ McNeil III caught two second quarter touchdown passes in the second quarter as he caught a 9-yard scoring strike and a 22-yard touchdown pass as the Cavaliers went to halftime in front 37-0.

VUL (0-1) failed to muster much of anything positive in the game. The Dragons amassed more punting yards (324) than total offense (202) while also being penalized 20 times for 149 yards.

UVA Wise's defense lived in the VUL backfield all afternoon. Linebacker DaQuandre Taylor had a career day defensively. The redshirt freshman finished with seven tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble to spearhead the Cavs' defensive effort.

Michael Rowser added a pair of forced fumbles for first- year defensive coordinator Matthew White while Daquan Battle added a trio of tackles and an interception to his stat ledger.

Redwine finished with a career-high 326 passing yards to go with his six touchdown passes. Martin finished with 66 receiving yards on six catches, McNeill III added 85 receiving yards and Jamal Fisher grabbed three catches for 37 yards.

On the ground, the Cavs gained 110 yards on 41 attempts, led by Jaevon Gillespie's 34 yards.

With the win, UVA Wise improves to 4-2 all-time in season openers under Damron and is 2-0 against VUL.

Next week, the Cavs visit NCAA FCS member East Tennessee State University in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
