CAA Mainstay UNC Wilmington Downs Longwood 3-0

22

Longwood University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 18

Jalen Anderson provided two goals and a lockdown defensive effort paved the way for UNC Wilmington as the Seahawks muscled past Longwood men's soccer 3-0 on Saturday night.

Anderson scored the team's first and third goal for his first collegiate multi-goal game in his career at UNCW (4-2, 0-1 CAA), and Nicolas Molina added one as well. The duo's outburst helped the Seahawks snap a two-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta, the CAA Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, and defender Michael Hornsby, an All-CAA Preseason selection, keyed a defense that notched its third shutout of the season.

The defensive effort prevented Longwood (1-4-1) from finding clean opportunities to test Perrotta in the team's second straight road match before opening up conference play next weekend. The Lancers posted nine shots with one on goal. Meanwhile, Anderson and Molina each had five shots apiece to combine for 10 of UNCW's 17 shots in the contest. Markus Gronli led Longwood with two shots.

"We weren't fully at the races tonight and didn't put enough resistance throughout the contest to get a result," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "UNCW are without doubt a capable team with players who can do damage. Unfortunately we hurt ourselves on more than one occasion, and that needs to change. We did create chances and had moments that could have turned the result around mid game, but we will be asking for more from our guys this week as we approach conference."

Anderson jumpstarted the scoring by capitalizing on a Longwood turnover in the 16th minute in the first half. The junior, who was selected as the inaugural CAA Offensive Player of the Week this season, banged home a shot from the top of the box off a pass from Ryan Graham.

That shot was the only shot on target for either side in the first half, but the Seahawks picked up the pace after halftime. UNCW generated 11 shots in the final 45 minutes. Molina, the CAA Offensive Player of the Week on September 6, scored on a free kick in the 47th minute. Anderson added his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute off a pass from Angelo Madrid.

Longwood heads back home to open conference play, the first of back-to-back home games. The Lancers host UNC Asheville on Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. before hosting NC State on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 p.m. Both games will be aired on ESPN+.
