University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 6
The UVA Wise Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-15) loss against the Newberry College Wolves today on Newberry's home court.
The UVA Wise Cavaliers (4-20, 0-16 SAC) were off to a good start in the first set as they scored the first two points due to a Wolves attack error and a Morgan Blevins kill. Newberry was able to respond, though, by a service ace and a Cavs ball-handling error. Once again, the Cavs snagged two points by Blevins' efforts and gave the Cavs the lead once again – but not for long. The Wolves rallied up an eight-point run led by Taylor Hall to grab an 11-5 lead. A Newberry service error gave the Cavs a freebie point to stop the rally, but another rally surfaced due to a service error from the Cavs' side of the net. From then on, the Wolves scored the next 12 points of the match and kept the Cavs in single digits. Newberry won, 25-7.
The second set saw similar gameplay, with the Newberry Wolves going on three rallies – consisting of seven points, four points, and five points. The combination of Newberry's kills and assists leaders Avery Webb and Natasha Bannister were able to silence the Cavs and finish off the second set with a score of 25-11.
In the third, Newberry started the action with three points right off the bat by two kills and a service ace. Cavalier Kelsey Green got the ball rolling for the Cavs with a kill to make the score 3-1. From that moment, points exchanged between the two teams and soon the Cavs found themselves with the lead 10-4 with a four-point rally led by a Kaylee Scarce kill. Newberry knew how to respond and had two back-to-back kills to tie the score 10-10. A few points later saw each team once again tied, but this time with a score of 14-14. The Wolves then became alive and went on a seven-point run to keep the Cavs at 14. Blevins produced a kill, but another four-point run gave the Wolves a final set win.
Newberry's Bannister led the night with 15 kills, and Webb ended the night with 33 assists. Blevins of the Cavs was the UVA Wise leader with six kills and teammate Rylee Waye ended with nine assists.
The Cavs bring it back home this Friday, Nov. 12 and face the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters with a 5:00 p.m. start.
