University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 20
Even a career- and game-high 29 points for junior forward Kaeleb Carter and five Cavaliers scoring in double-digits, it wasn't enough to give the Cavs enough juice to surpass the Anderson Trojans tonight, as the Cavs lost 104-95 in the Abney Athletic Center on Saturday, Nov. 20.
The UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers (0-4, 0-2 SAC) attacked first in the Abney Center with a layup by starting forward Jeff Jackson Jr. to get the action going. South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Player of the Week Parker Dortch led the Anderson Trojans (3-1, 1-1 SAC) with a jump shot in the paint to get Anderson on the board, and teammate Josh Livingston connected on a three-pointer from the left wing to aid the Trojans. The Dortch and Livingston duo accounted for over half of the Trojans' 31 points in the next 10 minutes of play.
The Cavs found themselves at a 12-point deficit with 7:58 left to go in the 1st half, but a run led by a Makai Vassell layup within the next minute would cut the lead in half. Anderson would then score 15 points while UVA Wise would put up 18 to end the half at a 51-42 score.
In the second half, Carter and Dean put up two back-to-back three pointers to find themselves down only five points to Anderson. Anderson's Livingston was still difficult to contain in the second half, who went 10-10 from field goal range and sank all his three-point shots. Livingston's performance was supported by a sharp-shotting Trojan squad, who shot 20-27 in the first half and 34-51 in the second half. Although the Cavs came close to snagging the lead back at the 17:05 mark at a one-point deficit, Quin Nottingham of the Trojans put up a layup, James Crosby II hit both free throws, and a Dortch hit a dagger to keep a 65-61 lead. Although scoring carried back and forth, a Crosby three-point shot solidified a 10-point Trojan lead at the 10:11 mark. A Joel Pettiford dunk gave UVA Wise a glimmer of hope for a comeback, but Nottingham and Livingston were unstoppable from the arc. Nottingham sank a three-point bucket with a minute left of play to grab the largest lead of the night with 16. Carter shot a three to guarantee a career-high 29 points for the junior, but the Trojans came out nine points above the Cavs to seal the deal.
UVA Wise found themselves in foul trouble in key moments of the game, as both starters Vassell and Jackson fouled out in the second half. Pettiford and Carter had to tread lightly as they ended the night with four each.
The Cavs shot 12-29 from three-point range, while the Trojans went 11-19 — a determining factor in the Anderson win.
On Anderson's side of the court, Livingston led the Trojans with 26 points and seven rebounds. Anderson ended the night with five players in double-digit scoring.
Next, the Cavs have the home-team advantage for the first time this season as they play Mars Hill on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
