Saints overcome Cavs, 90-72

24

University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 29

Even without leading scorer Ayo Dada and five Cavaliers scoring in double digits, the Limestone Saints (7-11, 5-10 SAC) took down The UVA Wise Cavaliers (1-17, 0-14 SAC) by a score of 90-72 in the Prior Center on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Saints never allowed the Cavs to lead for the entirety of the game once Stephen Odoka drove in a layup at the 18:12 mark. The Saints hit 14 shots from the field, but only dropped six of 17 three-pointers.

The Cavaliers couldn't get a shot to drop, hitting a 31.58 percent and only one three in the first half. In the second, the squad improved to a solid 51 percent from the field and hit six threes.

HALF BY HALF:

In the first, Limestone struck first with second-highest scorer Ben Gahlert throwing up a two-point bucket. After five minutes of low-emergy scoring, the Cavs came within one by a Joel Pettiford posterizing dunk. A foul on Dean and a sank shot from the charity stripe put the teams even. The even score didn't last for long, though, as the Saints doubled their score in the next five minutes with the help of Chase Freeman from downtown.

At the beginning of the second, the Cavaliers needed to bring themselves back from a 20-point deficit. Yet, Isayah Owens of Limestone dropped a couple of three-point bombs in the second half and never let the Cavs come within 17 points.

CAVS LEADERS:

Dean and Pettiford led the Cavaliers with 12 points each, and Isaiah McAmis, Kervens Yacinthe, and Caleb Lominac each put in 11 points in the bucket. Dean also contributed to the team's effort with six assists.

LIMESTONE LEADERS:

Ben Gahlert led the night with 18 points, as Owens followed with 14 points and game-high four three-pointers.
