Men's Cross Country Finishes Season At NCAA Southeast Regionals

Just two weeks after the team's performance personal and course record day at the Big South championships in Farmville, Longwood men's cross country ran strong and fast at the NCAA Southeast Regional Friday in Louisville. Ethan Pettyjohn led the way for the Lancers in the 10k, and Ben Goulet was not far behind as both runners etched their names in the record books as the 9th and 10th fastest 10K time, respectively, in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The men's 10K field was full of speed and some of the fastest runners in the country. Pettyjohn led the Lancers by six seconds and was able to clinch the ninth fastest 10K time in team history.

Goulet finished just behind fellow sophomore Pettyjohn, and his 33:48.4 time was good enough for the 10th fastest run in the event in school history. Both sophomores 10K times were also their personal record as they beat last years time in the Regional.

Sager ran what was his second best 10K time in his career with a 35:20.0. The senior's best time came just last season when he ran 11 seconds faster with a 35:09.0

Wiley made his debut 10K and was able to run it in 35:55.4.

Schaefer also made his debut 10k as the freshman ran his just 15 seconds behind teammate Wiley for a 36:10.5 time

Khan ran for the second consecutive year at the Regional and finished behind last years time after he ran a 37:29.8.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Proud of the team for going out in a fast field and taking chances," said head coach Brooke Craig after the completion of her team's fall season. "Paid off with some of our personal bests and record book times. This has been a historic season for the program. They've made a lot of strides with the focus on working together. Nobody wants to finish at the bottom in any race but you have to start somewhere. We're returning most of our top five next year and it's a great foundation to wrok off of. They'll get a few weeks off now before getting back to work for track."

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Sam Sager was the only upperclassman to compete at the Southeast Regionals this season.

Two Lancers had personal bests in the 10K, while two more made their collegiate debuts in the race.

Pettyjohn finished as Longwood's fastest runner for the fifth race this season.
