BLUE BEARS SPARK EARLY, CAVS FALL BY EIGHT
Despite a 17-point performance from sophomore Katlin Burger, Livingstone's early jump in the first quarter was too tough to overcome — and the Cavs fell by a score of 66-54.
Livingstone (2-2) sprung into gear with a 12-point lead after the first quarter. The Cavaliers (4-1) responded with a Nia Vanzant-appearance at the charity stripe and a layup, but Blue Bears Alexis Lake and Alyssa Boyce drove in a shot each to give Livingstone a 14-point lead. Going into the locker room, the Blue Bears had whipped up an 18-point lead.
After the break, UVA Wise found a third-quarter spurt — and had pulled themselves within eight at the 2:02 mark with help by Burger and Caitlyn Ross from the field. The fourth quarter began with a Ross layup, but Livingstone maintained a hearty lead with Andresia Alexander leading the way. The Blue Bears took the win, 46-38.
Livingstone's Alexander, Sha'Terra Ferrell and Jamiah Lane led their squad with 13 points each. Regardless of three players in double-digits, the Blue Bears struggled from the arc - only shooting a 16.7%.
Burger's 17 points led the Cavs, with Vanzant adding 11 points of her own. Josie Hester added a solid nine points from a 3-3 performance from the arc.
