CAVS FORCE OT BUT FALL AT COKER
Coker saw an 11-point lead evaporate but the Cobras were able to hang on in overtime to defeat UVA Wise 88-83 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in the Deloach Center Saturday.
UVA Wise (7-4, 1-3 SAC) trailed 73-68 with under two minutes to play when Calen Lightford connected on a 3-pointer to cut the Coker (7-5, 2-2 SAC) lead to two.
The hosts would extend the lead back to three when Tate Mulkey made of 1-of-2 free throws with 1:11 to play. The two schools would trade empty possessions before UVA Wise had the ball down three with less than 20 seconds to play.
Ben Bryson would tie the game when he made a corner 3-pointer off a Bradley Dean pass with 15 ticks to play in regulation. Following a Coker timeout, Bryson would force a Jordan Jones miss at the horn to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, the Cobras would strike first on a pair of charity shots from Mahmoud Bangura before Luke Lawson gave the visitors the lead with one of his four made triples on the afternoon.
It would be the last lead of the day for UVA Wise. Coker would finish the game with a 12-to-6 scoring run that was highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers, one each from Mulkey and Jones.
Cavalier post player Rron Ukaj had a career-day scoring as he tallied 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Ukaj was limited to 19 minutes due to foul trouble but, the junior was able to add eight rebounds to his ledger.
Dean scored all 17 of his points after halftime while Lawson (14), Lightford (13) and Bryson (10) also scored in double figures in defeat.
Coker made 13 shots from beyond the arc in the win, led by Mulkey who finished with a game-high 21 points. The Cobras also received 20 points from Jamie Muldowney off the bench along with 13 points from Bangura and 12 from Jones.
UVA Wise made just 11-of-20 foul shots in the contest as the team was playing in its second consecutive overtime contest.
Blake Mellinger's team is off until New Year's Eve when the team travels to Young Harris for the final game of the 2022 calendar year.
