CAVALIERS THWART SAINTS IN GAFFNEY
Bradley Dean's 24 points and Luke Lawson's perfect shooting performance hoisted UVA Wise past the Saints by a score of 92-63 in the Timken Center on Saturday night.
With the win, UVA Wise has now won back-to-back conference contests by at least 20 points — the first time in the program's Division-II era.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cavaliers (11-7, 4-5 SAC) began with an immediate three-point bomb from Rron Ukaj to get his squad in gear. UVA Wise had no trouble finding ways to score, as Calen Lightford and Luke Lawson each snagged buckets over the next five minutes. As play went on, Zach Laird of the Saints (7-10, 3-6 SAC) kept Limestone within reach with three three-pointers — but a gutsy Cavalier squad had jumped to a 14 point lead going into halftime.
In the second, Limestone didn't score until the 17:35 mark after Laird drew a foul and hit a bucket from the charity stripe. UVA Wise then went on to outscore the Saints 26-9 over the next ten minutes. Isayah Owens hit a shot from the arc to breathe life into the Saints, but a 16-point second half run from Dean had put the game to bed.
INSIDE THE BOX:The Cavs shot a 56.5-percent from the field and snagged 40 points in the paint. Limestone put up a 44.6-percent showing from the field and secured 26 paint points. Additionally, UVA Wise didn't let Limestone's leading scorer, Ben Gahlert, score a point. The Cavs converted 16 Limestone turnovers into 21 points, and the Cavs also outrebounded the Saints 34-to-27.
CAVS LEADERS:Dean led the night with 24 points with a perfect showing from the arc (3-3) and 8-12 from the field. Lawson put up 14 points and didn't miss a shot — the fifth year went 5-5 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, and 3-3 from the charity stripe. Ben Bryson and Patrick Shelley were the only other Cavalier double-digit scorers with 13 and 12 points respectively.
LIMESTONE LEADERS: Laird led the pack with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Greg McKay put up a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds.
