CAVS POLISH OFF SWEEP, BROOKS PICKS UP FIRST COLLEGIATE MOUND WIN
Brandon Costa's Cavaliers got right this weekend. The former Concord Mountain Lion took his team to his alma mater with a 4-12 record, following Sunday's doubleheader sweep, UVA Wise is now 8-12 on the year. Costa's club won the opener 7-3 before winning the series finale 8-1 to finish off the Cavs first series sweep of at least three games since sweeping Salem last March.
In the opener, UVA Wise (8-12) broke loose a 2-2 tie with a five-run fifth inning that featured homers from Cole Harness and Hunter Meador.
Morgan Miller and DJ Dickson added a single RBI each in the frame as Concord (4-10) fell behind 7-2 and never recovered.
The Mountain Lions would get within slam range in the home half of the fifth on a run-scoring hit from Daniel Lane but scoreless relief work from Nash Bingham and Hunter Anderson persevered the mound win for Daniel Kanagy.
Kangay improved to 2-3 as the right-hander fanned four while allowing three runs across five innings of work.
Harness finished game one 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored as he added a run-scoring double in the win.
Jacob Boyle and Matt Frye also added two hits each as part of a 10-hit effort for the Cavs.
Game two saw UVA Wise break a scoreless game with a four-run third inning to take command and never look back.
Dickson lined a RBI hit and Jeb Hurst belted a two-run double as part of the big offensive inning.
An inning later, Dickson continued his big day with a run-scoring double that allowed Miller to scamper home making it a 5-0 affair.
On the mound, Hunter Brooks allowed a single run over five innings of work. That run came in the fifth when Brendan Brady's run-scoring hit scored D.J. Christian.
Brooks' final pitching line read five innings, four strikeouts against a single walk while scattering five hits and allowing the run.
It was the best performance of the season for the freshman who recorded his first collegiate mound victory as relief pitchers Bingham and Jake Taylor tossed two scoreless innings to seal the win.
Hurst, Carter Babb and Miller all had an RBI in the seventh as UVA Wise tacked on some insurance runs to secure its fourth straight win.
Hurst finished 3-for-4 with three RBI with Frye and Dickson picking up two hits each.
Harness reached base twice via walk but saw his nine-game hitting streak snapped.
While Harness' streak ended, Dickson's continued. The outfielder has a hit in 10 consecutive games and is hitting .388 (14-for-36) over the span.
Next up, the Cavs return home for just their fourth game of the season Wednesday. First pitch against Bluefield State is slated for 2 p.m. from Stallard Field.
