The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded Wise County a $700,000 grant. The funding will support wastewater treatment system improvements at the Mountain Empire Community College’s (MECC) Center for Workforce and Innovation in Appalachia (CWIA). U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“Mountain Empire Community College’s CWIA trains and prepares students for workforce opportunities.

“This ARC grant for $700,000 helps Wise County improve sewer service to the CWIA, benefitting teachers and students.”

The wastewater treatment plant at the CWIA is over 40 years old. The new 900-gallon-per-day wastewater system will restore active sewer service to the center.

MECC provides 17 workforce training programs.
