The U.S. Department of Transportation has granted the Town of Bedford $1,481,000 to explore the development of a new intercity passenger rail stop. This initiative aims to enhance transportation options for the community located between Roanoke and Lynchburg.
U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith commented on the grant, stating: “Bedford is a growing community with a lot of potential, located between the cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg.” He further noted that “this DOT grant for nearly $1.5 million helps the Town of Bedford complete preliminary engineering and promote access to passenger rail services.”
The funding comes from the DOT’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program. The proposed station would be situated along tracks owned by Norfolk Southern, where Amtrak also operates. In August, Norfolk Southern reached an agreement with Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to extend Amtrak service to the New River Valley.
The project is officially named "Town of Bedford Virginia Intercity Passenger Rail Stop."
