The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration has granted Virginia Tech $249,654 to support a project aimed at collecting pedestrian data. This initiative is intended to enhance the safety and mobility of all individuals within U.S. transportation systems.
Congressman Morgan Griffith expressed his support for the grant, stating, "Virginia Tech dedicates research projects to promote the safety of drivers and pedestrians as well as related technologies." He added that the funding would enable Virginia Tech to collaborate with stakeholders and local communities in researching critical transportation system data. Griffith emphasized the importance of this work given the recent increase in pedestrian accidents in the region.
The funding comes from the FHWA Cooperative Agreements for the Exploratory Advanced Research Program (EARP), which focuses on long-term and high-risk breakthrough research with potential transformational impacts on planning, building, renewing, and operating safe transportation systems.
In September 2024, Virginia Tech received two DOT grants totaling over $940,000. These grants were designated to encourage safe driving practices among teenage drivers and advance driver assistance systems.
