The Virginia Highlands Airport Commission in Abingdon, Virginia, has been awarded a $1,055,800 grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration. The funds are allocated for constructing four new hangars, each 3,600 square feet in size, to accommodate aircraft storage.

U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith expressed his support for the project: “This DOT grant for more than $1 million helps Virginia Highlands Airport Commission create aircraft storage space for a major Abingdon general aviation transportation spot. As a result, this will hopefully allow for more visiting aircraft, and therefore more visitors, to come to the region.”

In previous years, Virginia Highlands Airport has received federal funding aimed at runway expansion. The current project is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the airport's capacity and financial self-sufficiency through revenue generation.
