This week in Southwest Virginia history.

Born December 24, 1921: Known for Football and Public Service

Born in Bluefield, Virginia, on December 24, 1921, William McGarvey Dudley was known for his achievements in American football. He attended Graham High School, where he began playing the sport. At the University of Virginia, he earned All-American honors and won the Maxwell Award. In 1942, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. He played for the Steelers, Lions, and Redskins, leading the league in multiple categories. Dudley also served in World War II as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was named NFL Most Valuable Player in 1946 and was later inducted into the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. After retiring, he worked in the insurance industry and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. He remained connected to his home state through community and professional service. He died on February 4, 2010, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
