Died February 4, 2010: Known for Football and Service
William McGarvey Dudley died on February 4, 2010, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was born in Bluefield, Virginia, and began playing football at Graham High School. He became known for his skill and performance at the University of Virginia, where he earned All-American honors and won the Maxwell Award. In the NFL, he played for the Steelers, Lions, and Redskins, and was named league MVP in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and played for military football teams. Dudley was inducted into both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. He later worked as a scout and entered the insurance business. He also served four terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. His career was marked by consistent performance and contributions to football at every level. His connection to Bluefield remained part of his story throughout his life and after his death.
