There were 5,779 students enrolled in Wise County schools in the 2024-25 school year, 1.8% less than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.
In terms of gender distribution, the student body in Wise County comprised 50.8% boys, with girls representing the remaining 49.2%.
Data also showed that white students made up 91.1% of the student body, the largest percentage in Wise County schools, followed by Black or African American students with 2.7%, 2.2% Hispanic students and 0.6% Asian students.
Union Primary School had the highest enrollment among Wise County’s 11 schools in the 2024-25 school year, welcoming 809 students.
According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools have an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, slightly better than the national average of 15:1. Minority students, primarily Hispanic and Black, make up 56% of the enrollment, while white students constitute 44%.
