The U.S. Department of Transportation's Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program has awarded a grant of $604,318 to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to support the identification of wildlife crossing sites across the state. The funding will enable VDOT to develop a comprehensive plan to identify roads with the highest risk of collisions with large mammals such as deer, bear, and elk.Under this plan, VDOT will utilize geographic models to pinpoint areas where wildlife crossings are most needed.
