LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS: Lopez and Harwood Named to NFHCA Postseason Award Teams

Hockey

Longwood University Athletics issued the following announcement on June 1

After finishing 2021 with an 8-5 record and four game winning streak, Luna Lopez was named to the NFHCA Division I All-South Region team, while Karly Harwood was named to the NFHCA Division I Senior team, the organization announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The South Region team nod for Lopez is her second-consecutive honor after she became the 11th Lancer to be named to the NFHCA All-South Region team as a sophomore in 2019, and marks the fifth-straight season that Longwood has had at least one member named to the team.

An impact player in all areas of the field, do-it-all midfielder Luna Lopez was once again a dominant force for the Lancers in 2021. Named to the All-MAC first team for the third time in three seasons in Farmville, Lopez racked up a goal and four assists in 10 games for the Lancers. The Mendoza, Argentina native was pivotal in helping maintain the third-best scoring margin in the conference at 0.84 and the second best opponent scoring average of just 1.08 while accumulating five shutouts. In conference play, Lopez tallied the game-winning goal against Central Michigan, and added two assists in two games against first place Miami.

Harwood, a senior from Gloucester, Va., was one of just 38 players named to the Division I Senior Team. Though the in-person senior game was canceled to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Virtual Coaches Caucus recognized a group of players graduating in the class of 2021 who played their senior season during the 2020-21 academic year.

Longwood's leading goal scorer two seasons in a row, Harwood continued to rack up goals in 2021. The senior led the team with eight goals, adding an assist to total 17 points across 13 starts. She also led the team with four game-winning goals, including both in Longwood's final two games against Appalachian State. Harwood was efficient in her scoring output, needing just 24 shots to score eight goals. A 2019 All-MAC second team member, Harwood capped her career with a MAC Offensive Player of the Week award, and scored six goals in her final four games.

With their spring 2021 season complete, the Lancers will return eight starters including Lopez for their 2021 fall season.
