Weiss Selected as 2021 WCC Professor Emeritus

Wytheville Community College issued the following announcement on July 29

Richard “Doc” Weiss has been selected as Professor Emeritus of Wytheville Community College (WCC) for 2021. This honor is given to a retired WCC faculty member who has held faculty rank, had a minimum of ten years of service and made significant contributions to the college.

Weiss earned his Associate of Applied Science in Police Science from New River Community College in 1975. He previously had earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1970. Weiss continued to receive his Master of Science in Educational Administration and Supervision, with a concentration in Community College Education and Administration, in 1978 and Master of Criminal Justice in 1992 from Radford University.

Weiss served as a WCC faculty member from August 1984 until his retirement in May 2018. He contributed to the success of the Police Science and Correction Science programs at WCC while serving as the program head for both programs. Weiss started the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Systems program at WCC in 1994 that is still an active program today, offering classes in basic self-defense. He spent time teaching in Maui, Hawaii during the 1997-1998 academic year as a part of a faculty exchange program. Weiss continues to contribute to the success of students in the program by returning to serve as an adjunct instructor.

During Weiss’s time at WCC, he served as a member of various ad-hoc committees including, the Multi-Year Appointment Committee, Professor Emeritus Committee, and the WCC Awards Committee. He also was a key member of standing committees including the Athletics Committee, Clery Committee, Threat Assessment, and Workplace Violence Prevention Committee, Institutional Effectiveness Committee, Affirmative Action Committee, and Curriculum Committee. Weiss also was the sponsor of the Police Science Club.

Weiss was also key in establishing the WCC Sprint for Scholarships 5K Run/Walk that raised funds for scholarships managed by the WCC Educational Foundation.

The college is pleased to honor Richard “Doc” Weiss for his years of dedicated service to the faculty, staff, and students of WCC.
