Longwood University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 26
Nothing comes easy on the road, but a battle-tested and resilient Longwood women's soccer team stayed unbeaten in Big South play with a 2-1 win at Presbyterian on Sunday afternoon.
The win comes on the heels of back-to-back draws to open conference play for Longwood (2-5-4, 1-0-2 Big South) and opens up a three-match road gauntlet. Alex Dinger had a hand in both goals for her first points of the season, with the dynamic sophomore assisting graduate student Madison Lockamy on Longwood's first goal and later scoring what proved to be the game-winner less than two minutes into the second half
"As always, you can count on a tight, competitive game when our two programs come together," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "We started well and created some chances, but then we had to absorb a little bit of pressure during the middle of that first half. The goal we scored was very timely and allowed us to settle in a little bit more on both sides of the ball."
Longwood came out with energy, ripping off four shots before Presbyterian (1-9-1, 0-2-1) had one in the opening half. The aggression paid off for a Lancer team playing its ninth road match of the season when Lockamy -- who also scored in Longwood's 2-2 draw against conference powerhouse Radford Thursday -- gave Longwood the lead in the 35th minute Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Lancer defense, long one of the top units in the Big South, continued its stingy ways in the first half, only surrendering one shot to Presbyterian (1-9-1, 0-2-1).
After halftime, Longwood struck again in lightning-quick fashion. Less than two minutes had elapsed before Dinger drove home her first goal of the season. Her left-footed strike in the 47th minute gave the Lancers a two-goal lead. Danielle Toone and Kiersten Yuhas had the assists.
Presbyterian cut the lead to one off a goal from Sophia Thompson in the 65th minute, but the Lancer defense kept it there to preserve the win. Jordan Horacek had a pair of saves for the Lancers.
"When we got the second goal, we had a little bit of breathing room but did not do a very good job of managing the game at that point," Dyer said. "PC kept coming at us, and they deserved the goal that they fought for. And then we just had to hang on and see it through until the end. We created a couple of chances afterwards that could've sealed the game for us, but we didn't and had to fight until the very end to hang onto that result. We have a quick turnaround now with a trip to Hampton on Tuesday."
Longwood's upcoming trip to Hampton will finish up a stretch of three matches in six days as the team nears the end of a stretch that has seen them them play nine of 10 away from home. Following the trip to Hampton, Longwood heads to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 2. The team finally returns home to open up a four-match homestand, beginning with Campbell on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
