Women's Tennis Can't Hang On, Fall 5-4 to Hornets

University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

The UVA Wise women's tennis team couldn't stick it out against the University of Lynchburg Hornets on Saturday, falling to a score of 5-4.

In doubles play, The duo of Katie and Liza Akimenko faced Christina Harris and Alissa Anderson, and took the win by an 8-4 tally. In the doubles matchup, Cavaliers Anna Hupperten and Grace Hall went up against Ellie and Grace Teefey and came up short as the Hornets took the match 8-1. In the last doubles matchup, Lauren Pascaldo and Alexa Hardesty of Lynchburg took on Sara Nichols and Sarah Moore, and the Cavalier side lost the match to the same score of 8-1.

In the no. 1 singles-play spot, Harris faced L. Akimenko. Haris fought hard, but L. Akimenko was able to tough out two set wins by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. 

In the following spot, K. Akimenko faced Pascaldo of the Hornets to try and snag another Cavalier win. K. Akimenko was able to follow in the same fate as her sister, picking up a 6-3 and 6-1 win.

In the third slot, the Hornets started to pick up momentum, winning the next three matchups. E. Teefey held Anna Hupperten to 6-2 and 6-0 losses. Anderson also picked up a Lynchburg win as she beat Moore by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Hardesty picked up another win for her squad against Emily Conn, who put up a fight but lost in the end by 6-2, 6-3 scores.

In the final singles match, Hall faced Pinola in the finale. Hall came out on top in the end, taking both sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

The Cavaliers would fall to the Hornets by a close 5-4 final score.

Up next, the Cavaliers play West Virginia Wesleyan at a neutral site in Harrogate, Tenn. on Saturday, February 19 at 9 AM.
