University of Virginia's College at Wise Athletics issued the following announcement on Feb. 20
The UVA Wise men's tennis team couldn't hold off West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats and the Buffalo of Milligan University on Saturday, February 19, falling by scores of 7-0 and 6-1 in the two-match play-day at neutral site Lincoln Memorial University.
In the Cavs first matchup against the Bobcats, Coleton Burke and Dominic Hoffman were placed in the No. 1 doubles spot against Camillo Salvi and Khiro Karasawa. The Cavalier duo couldn't put up a point, falling to the Bobcats 6-0. The first match was the start of a 18-0 Bobcat sweep in doubles, as partners Luke Jarnagin and John Robert Kilgore fell in their No. 2 spot, and Dylan Galenksi and Siddarth Selvukamar also took the loss in their matchup.
In singles play, frontman Hoffman faced up against Taylor Papworth, but couldn't swing in a point as the Cavalier fell in two 6-0 sets.
In the No. 2 spot, Burke faced Bobcat Salvi, and fell 6-0 and 6-1.
From there, the next two matchups ended in losses for the Cavs, as Jarnagin, Kilgore, and Galenksi couldn't seal the deal against Karasawa, James McIntosh, and Carlos Garces Granero.
In the final singles match, Selvakumar gave opponent Patrick McGee a run for his money, as Selvakumar forced a tiebreaker set after defeating him in the second set by a 6-2 score. The tiebreaker set swayed in Bobcat direction, though, and McGee took the win 10-4.
In the second match of the day, Hoffman & Burke took a Buffalo loss, losing the set 6-1. The next two sets were also Buffalo wins, and Jarnagin and Kilgore dropped a 6-1 set and Galenksi and Selvakumar fell to Landon Brown and Austin Moreno.
Milligan had a sweep over the Cavaliers in singles play, as Hoffman and Kilgore were not able to get a point in against Nate Smiley and John Rigsby. Burke stayed competitive against Moreno in the No. 2 spot, but fell by a score of 6-3.
The last two matches of the day were the most competitive, as Galenski fought against Dan Roshzil, but fell by set scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
Selvakumar and Brown faced each other, and Selvakumar took the only win for the Cavaliers on teh day as he took down his opponent by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
The losses put the Cavaliers at an overall 4-5 record.
