Longwood Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener At East Tennessee

HOW IT HAPPENED:

A first half that featured 11 combined shots saw the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (1-0) put two in the back of the next before the first half whistle. Pannholzer put a shot in the bottom right corner for the first Bucs goal and Ramos found the back of the net from a Lightner pass.

ETSU extended their lead with an early second half goal when Portas placed a shot in the bottom left corner. Richards capped off the Bucs scoring with a right footed finish to the same spot with just over 10 minutes to play

WHAT THEY SAID:

"The game told us quite clearly we are still early in our season preparation," said head coach Jon Atkinson after the match's conclusion. "While I'd like for us to be closer, the adaptation to the system and personnel is going to take time as well as game fitness. At times we looked very good on the ball and moved ETSU around, but we still had the hand brake on with our speed of play. Because of that, we turned the ball over needlessly."

"ETSU executed their moments well, they kept the game simple and honest with good quality in their attacking roles. As we know goals are an energy booster especially early in seasons when you are searching for your identity so fair play to them."

"Our boys will have a hangover for sure as we let ourselves down but it's early and we know we are capable of much more."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

ETSU has won both matchups against the Lancers since Longwood (0-1) became a DI program. Last season the Bucs claimed a 1-0 victory on August 27th

Longwood equaled ETSU shots on goal with five but were out shot 12-8 in total shots. Freshman Franco Di Giovanni led the team in shots on goal with two.

Six Lancers made their Longwood debuts, one of which was a collegiate debut with Di Giovanni.

Cole Hunter, the keeper for the Buccaneers, recorded four saves.

The Lancers continue their road trip for three more contests before hosting their season opener on September 13th.

UP NEXT:

Longwood heads to Lexington, Virginia on August 31st to play the Virginia Military Institute.
