The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded Virginia Tech a $126,000 subgrant to support the Quantum Appalachia project. This initiative aims to connect quantum computers and devices for information and resource distribution.
U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) commented on the grant, stating, "As quantum computing emerges, Appalachia is fertile ground for the quantum technology market." He added, "This ARC grant for $126,000 helps the Appalachia region and United States in competing against China and Russia in the future."
The subgrant is part of a larger $500,000 ARC funding awarded to Tennessee Technological University. The final goals of the Quantum Appalachia project include establishing quantum technology startups that will boost and diversify economic growth in the region.
Estimates indicate that the quantum technology market could grow to $106 billion by 2040.
