The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has allocated a grant of $252,500 to the New River Valley Regional Commission. This funding is designated for initial construction planning and reports concerning the establishment of a passenger rail station in Christiansburg, Virginia. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) expressed his support for the initiative, stating:
“This ARC grant for $252,500 helps the New River Valley Regional Commission advance the planning phase of preparing a passenger rail station for the New River Valley, a project which could boost the local economy and provide rail service to a wider audience.”
In recent developments, Norfolk Southern has entered into an agreement with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to extend Amtrak service to the New River Valley. The New River Valley Regional Commission is tasked with overseeing various aspects of the project. These include developing a Preliminary Architectural Report, conducting an Environmental Review Record, performing a Proforma analysis, and preparing Final Design/Bidding/Construction documents for the proposed rail station.
