Buchanan County: 3.4% less students were enrolled in 2023-24 school year

There were 2,378 students enrolled in Buchanan County schools in the 2023-24 school year, 3.4% less than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

In terms of gender distribution, the student body in Buchanan County comprised 52.1% boys, with girls representing the remaining 47.9%.

Data also showed that white students made up 97.4% of the student body, the largest percentage in Buchanan County schools, followed by Hispanic students with 1.6%, 0.2% Asian students and 0.2% Black or African American students.

Riverview Elementary/Middle School had the highest enrollment among Buchanan County's eight schools in the 2023-24 school year, welcoming 729 students.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools have an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, slightly better than the national average of 15:1. Minority students, primarily Hispanic and Black, make up 54% of the enrollment, while white students constitute 46%.
