Wytheville Community College issued the following announcement on Aug. 20
The Wytheville Community College (WCC) Educational Foundation recently recognized Jim Harrington, WCC Associate Professor of Administration of Justice and Correction Science, with the 2021 WCC Improvement of Instruction Award.
Harrington joined WCC as a full-time faculty member in 2018 as an assistant professor of Administration of Justice. He also serves as the student club sponsor of the Criminal Justice Club. Before coming to WCC he had taught criminal justice at the Wythe County Technical Center to high school students. Harrington also served many years as a Sergeant for the Wytheville Police Department. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Police Science from WCC, a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration and Management from Kaplan University, and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Crime Prevention from the University of Cincinnati. Harrington is also a member of the Wytheville Lions Club.
Harrington was recognized for his commitment to the success of students at WCC. He demonstrates a desire to not only improve the programs that he oversees but also to see students grow. Harrington often goes above and beyond to provide out-of-the-box learning opportunities for his students, whether it is taking students on tours of local and state police agencies or bringing new technology into the classroom. He strives to give his students the best possible education to prepare them for real-world work in law enforcement or corrections.
Students who enroll in the Administration of Justice program at WCC will not only have Harrington as an instructor and advisor but also as a mentor with real experience in the field of law enforcement. He integrates technology and real-life scenarios into the curriculum to not only give students the knowledge needed to graduate but also to prepare them to serve their community. Harrington also recently served on a Virginia Community College System panel to review criminal justice curricula at community colleges across the state.
The WCC Improvement of Instruction Award was established to recognize notable contributions to the improvement of instruction at WCC by a full-time employee who holds faculty rank or who works as an instructional assistant. An endowment created by Dr. and Mrs. Len O’Hara funds the award; Dr. O’Hara served as WCC Dean of Instruction during the 1980s.
