Griffith Announces $1,650,000 to Virginia Tech for Three High Energy Physics Projects

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of High Energy Physics has allocated $1,650,000 in funding for three high energy physics projects at Virginia Tech. High energy physics, as defined by DOE, focuses on studying the fundamental particles that make up our universe and delving into the nature of space and time.

Griffith expressed his enthusiasm for these projects, stating, "There is still so much in our universe that has yet to be discovered. These three projects, supported by awards from the Department of Energy, will help us make new advancements in our work to understand all aspects of the world around us."

The three projects that have received funding are as follows:

1. Virginia Tech Center for Neutrino Physics HEP Umbrella - This project has been granted $1,050,000. Neutrinos, considered to be one of the most elusive particles in the universe, will be the focus of research under this initiative. By studying neutrinos, scientists hope to gain a deeper understanding of their properties and their role in the cosmos.

2. Studies of Fundamental Neutrino Properties at the Intensity Frontier - This project has been awarded $350,000. It aims to investigate the fundamental properties of neutrinos, such as their mass, oscillation patterns, and interactions with other particles. By studying these properties, researchers aim to shed light on the mysteries surrounding neutrinos and their significance in the broader context of particle physics.

3. Muon and Neutrino Science at Virginia Tech - This project has received $250,000 in funding. Researchers will focus on studying muons and neutrinos, exploring their properties and behavior. Muons are similar to electrons but are much heavier, and neutrinos, as mentioned earlier, are fundamental particles with intriguing characteristics. This project aims to deepen our understanding of these particles and their role in the universe.

With this funding, Virginia Tech will be able to bolster its research capabilities in high energy physics and contribute to the global scientific community's ongoing efforts to unravel the mysteries of the universe.
