U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has introduced H.R. 7854, the Unaccompanied Minor Placement Notification Act, which requires the Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to provide advanced notification to school districts and child welfare agencies when an unaccompanied minor is placed in their respective jurisdictions.
"Unaccompanied minors are crossing our southern border in record droves," said Griffith. "ORR currently fails to notify any school district or child welfare agency if an unaccompanied minor is placed in a home, leading to issues of illegal child labor and abuse. The Unaccompanied Minor Placement Notification Act changes this HHS policy and it will give some protection to minors from exploitation."
The bill aims to address concerns regarding the lack of communication between ORR and local authorities when unaccompanied minors are placed in their care. By mandating advanced notification, the legislation seeks to provide a safeguard against potential exploitation and ensure the well-being of unaccompanied minors.
In a statement, Congressman Griffith emphasized the importance of the Unaccompanied Minor Placement Notification Act in protecting vulnerable children who have arrived unaccompanied in the country. The bill text is available for further review.
The introduction of H.R. 7854 reflects efforts to enhance oversight and coordination in the placement of unaccompanied minors, with the ultimate goal of preventing situations that may put these children at risk.
