U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) recently testified before the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies during their "Member Day" session. The focus of his testimony was to advocate for the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program.

The Subcommittee is tasked with drafting the Fiscal Year 2026 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill. Rep. Griffith's opening remarks are available for viewing online.

The AMLER program, managed by the Virginia Department of Energy, encompasses projects such as infrastructure improvements and site redevelopment. These initiatives may involve cleaning up gob piles and removing high walls to enhance safety and development potential in affected areas.

Rep. Griffith has been a key supporter of the AMLER program in Virginia, playing a significant role in including the Commonwealth in the Abandoned Mine Land pilot program. This inclusion has allowed Southwest Virginia to secure tens of millions in federal funding.

In 2024, AMLER allocated $10 million to projects located in deep Southwest Virginia. Rep. Griffith has also participated in ribbon-cutting ceremonies for recent AMLER projects at Big Cherry Lake in Wise County and Devil’s Bathtub in Scott County.
