Jefferson National Forest issued the following announcement on May 21
Join the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service on a field visit to the project area of the proposed Ewing Mountain project. The project goal is to improve wildlife habitat in the Ewing Mountain area of Grayson, Wythe and Carroll Counties through timber harvest and thinning activities. The field visit will provide an opportunity to see the project area and hear from Forest Service specialists.
The field visit will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Please meet on State Route 644 at the intersection with Cripple Creek Road (Forest Road #49710), at 1 p.m.
From the meeting location, we will travel up Cripple Creek Road to the dirt parking area by the Forest Service gate. Travel along this road requires a high-clearance vehicle. Carpool options may be available from the meeting site. The field visit may include walking through the woods, so please bring drinking water and appropriate footwear.
Forest Service specialists will be available to provide information and answer questions about the proposed timber harvest and thinning activities within the ruffed grouse habitat management area.
If you would like to attend the field trip, please RSVP to Project Coordinator Chris Brown at christopher.j.brown@usda.gov by noon Wednesday, May 28.
The project is in the planning phase and we are asking for public input during a 30-day comment period that began on April 28, 2021, and ends May 28. For more information about the project, please see the draft environmental assessment on the project webpage: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=44665.
Comments will not be collected during this field visit as this is an opportunity to answer questions and provide information about the project.
