Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has announced that the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) has awarded a federal grant of $298,466.32 to the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society. The grant, provided through NFWF's Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Fund, aims to increase conservation planning and active forest management to benefit the declining Ruffed Grouse population.

The Ruffed Grouse, a bird species that has experienced a 71% decline, is suffering due to a lack of forest habitat diversity and increased predation. The grant will enable the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society to address these challenges and work towards increasing the population.

Congressman Griffith expressed his optimism about the impact of the grant, stating, "I look forward to seeing how this grant will help increase the population of the Ruffed Grouse throughout Southwest and Southside Virginia, through better conservation planning and forest management."

The Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Program, established in 2017 by NFWF, aims to enhance the quality and connectivity of forest and freshwater habitats, as well as increase the distribution and abundance of native fish, birds, and other wildlife.

The grant awarded to the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society is a significant step towards preserving and restoring the Ruffed Grouse population in Central Appalachia. With increased capacity for conservation planning and active forest management, the organizations can work towards reversing the decline of this bird species.

The importance of this grant cannot be overstated. The Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society will now be able to implement effective measures to protect and enhance the habitats crucial for the survival of the Ruffed Grouse. Through collaborative efforts and strategic conservation planning, the organizations aim to create a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem for not only the Ruffed Grouse but also other wildlife in the region.

This grant serves as a testament to the commitment of NFWF and Congressman Griffith to the conservation and preservation of our natural resources. By investing in habitat stewardship and forest management, we can ensure the long-term viability of the Ruffed Grouse population and promote the overall health of the Central Appalachia region's ecosystems.

As the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society begins implementing the grant, it is hopeful that their efforts will lead to a significant recovery in the Ruffed Grouse population. With continued support and collaboration, we can work towards protecting and conserving the unique biodiversity of Central Appalachia for generations to come.
