Congressman Morgan Griffith of Virginia's Ninth District and Congresswoman Kat Cammack of Florida's Third District have joined other members of Congress in urging the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expedite disaster aid for those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
In a letter co-signed by Griffith, led by Representative Cammack, they call for the USDA to take immediate action. The letter requests that more Farm Service Agency personnel be deployed to affected areas, that local entities work with the USDA to gather accurate rainfall data, and that block grants be provided to states for hurricane relief.
Griffith emphasized the urgent need for assistance in his district, stating, "Many of the farmers in Virginia’s Ninth District have been devastated by Hurricane Helene and expedited relief for them is critical." He further noted his personal assessment of the damage: "As I have traveled around the district to assess the damage, I have talked with and seen firsthand the damage and devastation of crops, livestock, buildings, and fences."
The congressman reiterated his commitment to supporting recovery efforts: "Getting the resources and assessments needed to provide relief as quickly as possible to these farmers is paramount to rebuild their farms and continue the work they do. I will continue working to help farmers rebuild their farms, and this is a critical first step."
He expressed hope for a swift recovery: "I hope all farmers and counties devastated by Hurricane Helene recover as soon as possible."
