The individual responsible for the murder of Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler has been sentenced to 100 years in prison. The sentencing relates to the incident that occurred in November 2021. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith, alongside Attorney General Jason Miyares and local officials, participated in a press conference in Wise County to express their approval of the verdict and honor Officer Chandler.
Congressman Griffith remarked on the occasion: “Southwest Virginia has tremendous respect and affinity for the dedication of our law enforcement officials and their families. The support expressed by the local community today is recognition of this fact."
He further stated, “I joined the Big Stone Gap and Wise County communities to honor Officer Chandler’s service and thank the region’s dedicated law enforcement officials. While the verdict reached today does not bring Officer Chandler back, I hope it provides some sense of closure to his loved ones and community.”
Following Officer Chandler's murder, Representative Griffith took steps to commemorate him by requesting a flag be flown over the U.S. Capitol and entering remarks into the Congressional Record.
