The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has allocated $46,670,000 to Virginia for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) confirmed the funding, which aims to aid communities affected by the hurricane.
"Now that a disaster supplemental passed Congress and got signed into law, essential funds are being allocated to Virginia to address damages incurred by Hurricane Helene," said Griffith. "This grant for $46,670,000 helps communities in Southwest and Southside Virginia recover from Helene."
The funding comes from the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2025, supported by Congressman Griffith in December 2024. In late September, Southwest and Southside Virginia experienced severe damage due to Hurricane Helene's storm conditions. The region saw houses destroyed and widespread power outages as rainfall exceeded 12 inches in some areas. The New River experienced historic flooding from Grayson to Giles at the West Virginia border.
In response to the devastation, Rep. Griffith surveyed storm damage shortly after the hurricane hit. He visited several locations with Governor Youngkin and thanked first responders while assessing damage in Damascus and Independence.
Rep. Griffith collaborated with U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in supporting Governor Youngkin's request for federal emergency declarations from President Biden, which were approved successfully.
Nearly all localities within Virginia’s Ninth District have been granted either individual or public assistance following these declarations. Rep. Griffith also met with National FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell at a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center for updates on recovery efforts.
Two bills co-sponsored by Rep. Griffith have been introduced in the House of Representatives: The Disaster Recovery and Resilience Act aims to expedite disaster recovery resources' mobilization; meanwhile, The Helene Recovery Support Act proposes an additional $15 billion for disaster relief aiding small businesses.
Furthermore, Rep. Griffith joined colleagues in urging President Biden's Office of Management and Budget to request immediate supplemental appropriations from Congress for communities devastated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
